Living in a time of wastefulness and carelessness, and the seeming acceptance of a disposable and throw-away society, I believe my modern cultural artifact (found object) art is a way to reuse and recycle that which is destined for the trash. Yes, I can be found picking up odds and ends off of parking lots. I keep a container for bottle tops and soda tabs in my kitchen, and will often leave a party with a purse full of these items. I have been known to (during a red light, of course) get out of the car at an intersection to pick up some cool looking "stuff." Even friends and neighbors have seen my art as a good way to get rid of items that have collected in their junk drawers at home. It is these items which I attach to a wood base (often rescued from the fate of the garbage truck) with a construction grade adhesive. If you plan on trying this as home… I suggest you get yourself gloves and a good breathing ventilator with a chemical cylinder, even if you are planning on doing this outside. Even with the ventilator, young children and pregnant women will want to steer clear of participating in this art form, as the adhesive and the polyurethane, until dry, can be harmful. The sculpture are generally primed and painted with six coats of paint… magic happens… then sealed with three coats of polyurethane. Depending upon size and layers, a piece may take me several days to several months to complete.
